We are having a crime spree bought to us by our youths. Young kids some as young as 6 years old's are being caught breaking and entering houses, stealing cars and violent assaults.
Almost daily on the ABC news we are made aware of new cases and political solutions to the issue.
What is causing the kids of today, from a diverse social demographic background, to suddenly decide to commit the most heinous crimes against the vunerable and elderly?
Could it be trying to gain noteriety by recording their crimes on their mobile phones and then post it in TIC TOC? An adolescent rite of passage to gain dominace in an imagined heirachy?
Could it be plain teenage rebellion?
Or perhaps there are drugs involved?
Maybe the knowlege that once convicted the court will be all to lenient to the offenders? Do they see themselves as being the untouchables?
Could it be, as in the case of the aboriginal population, that the kids are harrrassed by the authorites so often that the kids feel that they may as well committ the crimesw they are constantly being accused of?
Some may come from perilous homes where drugs, crime and domestic abuse is a regular feature. these kids then having a grudge against society.
Whatever the reason, it is impossible to get away from the societal definition of right and wrong. Even if parents did not set boundaries and limitations on their kids, tv, movies, news media and all social activites emphasise the social right and wrongs.
There is no excuse for the actions of these youths.
How do we stop these kids?
The legal avenue and jailing has proven time and time again that it does not work. Put an animal in a cage and you get physchologially damaged animal which becomes totally unpredictable.
The concept of rehabilitation is fraught with failures and uncertainties. Prisoners come out of prison having found religion go onto commit the most heinous of crimes against humanity in the name of Christianity. ( One good example, although never a prisioner, though he should be jailed, is Scott Morrison and the LNP)
This is not a problem confined to our modern times, speaking to a very old historian from the Fort Lytton historical Society in the 1980's, I learned that the area now known aw the bayside suburbs of Brisbane were in fact a camp for miscreat youth.
Troublesome youth were sent there and kept under guard. They were issued with tools and a very limitted amount of food. If they wanted to live they had to learn to work together become a coherent team that would become totally self sufficient. Of course some did not survive, but those that did became the pillars and rogues(politicians) of the society today. They built farms, houses, roads, fishermen sold their catch in shops these youths owned and built.
Perhaps a solution could be that we send all the miscreant youths to the Armed forces where they learn mateship and to work as part of a multiskelled interctive team.
Perhaps harsh military discipline could instil into the kids that tools they need to be a functioning member of society. As an added bonus the military would have the pick of the best recruits.
It is not an easy solution by any means but one I feel warrants some discussion.
I am sure there are other solutions?
