I see you lurkers out there.
This is a new board only started a few weeks ago and it needs a few members so I hope you choose to join up. I'm a bit less strict than other forum owners you may have come across. Proboards has its own terms of service so I don't see the need to publish lists of rules for people to follow. Nearly all of us understand basic morality and ethics. Only courts and religious people write that kind of thing in stone. I think the internet should be uncensored and open to free speech wherever possible. Forums that force their narrow world view on others with threats of banishment are sad pathetic places run by fascist scumbags in my opinion. Without differing views we become a room full of nodding heads with nothing new to say.
The board has been getting a lot of visitors but very few signups so far. Always the same with a new website. I used to run hundreds of groups at facebook and it took me years to figure out the formula for attracting new members. Atheism is a particularly difficult subject to build on as people prefer celebrity and fandoms in my experience. Some of my biggest facebook groups had hundreds of thousands of members by the time I got exhausted with running them and moved on to other things. The two biggest groups I founded were:
www.facebook.com/groups/ElonMusk
www.facebook.com/NeildeGrasseTyson
Each has hundreds of thousands of members. Even my smaller groups had memberships in the tens of thousands. Celebrities both dead and alive are the most popular groups you'll find on facebook but I did have some clubs based on special interests.
Here at Proboards I plan to gradually build up an australian atheists forum list based on science and fun. Einstein always liked to say that science should be fun and atheism is at its heart a science based subject. Questioning religious claims and demanding evidence for such claims is fundamentally a scientific approach to the matter.
Religion has no real evidence to back up its claims but science now has mountains of evidence to discredit religion. From biology, fossils and DNA which destroy the creationism myths to the physical laws of the universe that prove an omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent god a ridiculously flawed impossibility.
I've added forums on History and Atheists to the mix also. The chaotic maelstrom of the past brought us to this increasing secular time we now inhabit and if trends continue then religious people might soon become a minority. Good riddance to bad rubbish. The atheist movement is not as driven as religious societies. Trying to organise atheist people into a cohesive unified group is like herding cats. Frontline representative leaders do most of the hard work of putting across our position on faith based belief systems and these celebrities come from a swathe of backgrounds both educated and merely clever.
What do I want to achieve with this Australian Atheists Board. Nothing really. Just somewhere to share news, jokes, ideas, questions and whatever else seems kind of relevant to atheism in Australia. I run a loose ship and don't particularly care much for rules myself so I'd be a hypocrite to enforce any too strictly. Frankly I'd rather spend my board time posting stuff. What you choose to get out of the place is up to you. Like a bank you tend to get out of forums what you put into them with a little bit of accumulating interest. Currently the board is getting over 250 guests a day on average but they are too shy to signup.
